a) you could probably use system restore to revert back
to the way your system was before the update, and then go
back to windows update and carefully look at all the
updates to see if one obviously effects display (eg a
display adapter driver)

b) in device manager roll back the display adapter driver

Thanks Jamie system restore did the trick, now I shall have another look at
the updates.
