View Full Version : My system clock gets delayed all the time
josemanuel
April 23rd 03, 11:26 PM
It is not a problem of misconfiguration of timer server and zone time,
discarded, it is not a battery problem, as I have windows millenium on
another partition, and the clock goes fine all the time. I guess it is a
virus problem, but nor panda, neither kaspersky have solved it. I had a
similar problem a couple of months ago, solved with pandasoftware online
antivirus, but now it does not help.
Any hint or help?

Hi
Try this:
1. Start->Run cmd.exe
2. net stop w32time
3. w32tm /unregister [ignore error message]
4. w32tm /unregister
5. w32tm /register
6. net start w32time
If you have a Dell, you can also install the Dell Time Keeping Utility, found
at Dells Online support (but I think the procedure above will fix the Dell
problem as well).
Description: Dell systems with factory installed Microsoft Windows XP Pro or
Home may lose time. Time loss rate has been reported as high as a 20 minute
loss per hour.
http://support.dell.com/
You do not need to register, you can use the Alternative Sign In (Standard
Support) to obtain it.

So you think there may be some program running in the background that makes
my system clock going back in time?
I have no antivirus permanently working, I only use them ocasionally when I
detect some problem.
Another symptom of the problem is that when I turn on the computer, the time
is the same it was when I turned it off last time, but this only happens
when I boot with windowsxp, if I boot with milenium. the clock works
perfectly.
As I told, a couple of just updated antivirus cannot find any virus that
could be responsible of this behavior, it is a very annoying thing that I
cannot solve.
Am I the only one with this problem?

When you turn on the computer is it coming out of sleep or hibernate? If so,
that explains it. It is simply reloading the display image it had. If you
boot up from a complete power down the clock on your display gets set to the
BIOS clock. If the BIOS clock is not running when power is off the battery
is dead or you have a failing component on the board. When power is on the
battery is not used and the clock on your display gets updated every minute.
If it doesn't update something is blocking the program that does the update.

There are two articles at the MS site concerning slow clocks. Have you read
them?
