Have you recently installed any software? Especially, have
you recently installed (or configured for an account) any
instant messaging software, filesharing software, media
desktops, or that sort of thing?

And what's running behind your back out of the registry
Run keys? If you aren't sure what registry keys I mean,
get AdAware or something like it, and check for spyware.
(If you do know about the Run keys, checking them by
hand is probably easier. Export a backup copy of the
relevant registry branch first, then disable anything
you don't recognise. If this fixes your problem, you
can restore them one by one from your exported .reg file,
and when you restore one and your problem comes back you
have your culprit.)

It may not be something inimical, but standard software updates from various
things you really want on your computer.

Click on the control panel and then double click on "Scheduled Tasks".
There you will find a list of tasks that probably includes one or more that
want Internet access for valid reasons like anti virus protection updates
and the like.

Double click on each entry on the list to check and change it if necessary.
Make sure you check the "Advanced" radio button from the "Schedule" tab as
that is where multiple repetions are specified. If you do not want
reptetitions, uncheck the "Repeat task" box.
