View Full Version : Grepping with Explorer

Hi,

When I want to do a word-in-files search with Windows Explorer it seems that
it always limits the filies to search to *.txt, *.doc etc, despite that I
either leave the filename box empty or put *.* there.

How can I have it search ALL files for the string?

TIA

Try just typing in the name in the all or part box.
I hope this helps.

I do not understand what you mean with the All or Part box.

In my Explorer search pane (XP Pro SP1) I have the boxes (translated:-)

Complete or portion of the filename
Word or expression in the file
Folder to search

In the Options page I have set 'search system/hidden files etc...)

Other clues?

Tor:
Did you try just typing in the name in the first box?

Word or expression in the file. However indexing services must be
started and the volume must be allowed to be indexed.

It only searches in files that are registered. Instead of using the
search tool in Windows, I prefer to replace it with one that will look
in all files. My search utility of choice is the free version of File
Locater Pro, called Agent Ransack, which can be downloaded at
http://www.agentransack.com/default.aspx.

If you want to continue to use the XP search utility, see this article
by Doug Knox on how to get Windows XP to look in more files -
