Proxy Automatically Detect Settings

Hi,

I am looking for documentation of what exactly the the IE
Automatically Detect Settings does in the LAN Proxy
Settings area. My search thru the MSFT site did not yield
anything.

It is my understanding that it checks for the existance of
the proxy server and/or configuration script. If it does
not find it, it does not use it. If Auto detect is not
checked, it continually attempts to use the proxy whether
it can find it or not. Is this correct? Can you point me
to a source for the description?
