View Full Version : File sharing over XP

Hi all, I have just set up a small network for a friend of mine. One is a PC
and the other a laptop. They are connected through a Netgear router. The
laptop is NTFS and I'm not sure about the PC.
I have turned off ICF on both machines and am trying to run the Network
wizard, without any great deal of success.
Can I enable simple file sharing, as all I need is a shared 'My Documents'
folder on each machine.
Is it just a case of right clicking on the folder on each machine, and
select the 'sharing' tab, and enable the bottom box for Network sharing and
security.
Do I have to have the same workgroup names etc., or would this be immaterial
in this scenario?
Any help appreciated.
Regards
John

Enable DHCP on the router. Set the PC's to Obtain an IP address
automatically. Make the workgroup name the same. In the properties of the
network connection, make sure you have Client for Microsoft Networks, File
and Printer sharing, and TCP/IP. In the properties of TCP/IP, Enable
NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

Are you saying that the Network Setup Wizard fails to run, or that the
Wizard runs successfully but the network doesn't work?

Try running the Wizard again, and tell it that the computer connects
to the Internet through a "residential gateway". That's the Wizard's
term for a broadband router like yours. It will create a shared
documents folder on each machine. Put your documents in that folder.

It isn't possible to share the My Documents folder using simple file
sharing. Simple file sharing is enabled by default. If you have XP
Professional, you can disable it.

It's helpful, but not necessary, to use the same workgroup name on
each machine.

The file system (NTFS, FAT, FAT32) is irrelevant.

Hi Steve, I'll try what you suggested. The wizard runs fine, and I have used
it on both PC and laptop, but it is still not picking up the network yet.
Appreciate your help.
