View Full Version : 95 seconds to open network folder

A Windows XP Pro SR1 machine (build 2600) sharing a workgroup network with 5
other Win 98 workstations and a Win98 mail and proxy server, takes 95
seconds to open a shared folder on any of the other machines.

Ping works fine to any of the other machines.

A backup batch file copies files from the XP workstation to another machine
on startup with no problems.

Mail gets picked up and delivered promptly.

But opening a folder on another machine - either by browsing through
computers or through a mapped drive - takes 95 seconds. After making the
connection to a machine all other folders on that machine may be accessed
promptly. Then trying to open a folder on a different machine will take 95
seconds again during which Windows XP locks up.

HELP PLEASE!

TIA

Paul

Hi

Check out this Knowledge Base Article:

I believe you will have to change your interframe gap or buy new network cards.

Thanks Jim, but that article refers to general slowness of the network, not
the delay in creating the browser connection that I'm experiencing. I'll try
it but I've since also found a raft of other articles that relate to XP
networking which may be helpful. Including:
increasing the Lanmanserver's SizReqBuf value
deleting stored network passwords
Disable searching for printers and scheduled tasks
Disabling webclient service
And changing the Netbios registry settings.

Cheers

Paul

Fixed it by stopping the Web Client Service. Only Bill knows why this would
cause Windows to hang for over a minute while trying to open a LAN folder.
