View Full Version : Login from Windows 98 to Windows XP

I have a network with the 2 OS's listed in the subject.
The XP box is using NTFS, no simple file sharing. We
have 2 users on the XP machine. The XP box can access
the files on the W98 box without a problem. The W98 box
cannot login to the XP box. I am using the same user ID
on both machines, same password. The network isn't a
domain.
Any ideas as to why I can't login to the XP box?
Thanks,
The Bluez

How are you trying to log onto the XP box? What exactly happens when
you do it?
If you get an IPC$ prompt, the problem is that XP doesn't recognize
the user who wants to access its files. Logging into W98 with a user
name and password that belong to an account on XP should fix that. If
it doesn't, the problem could be that the permissions on the XP share
or on the NTFS file system don't include the Everyone group. See this
site for details:

I am typing \\computername from the run line. I receive
a password prompt. When I put the password in, I receive
a Microsoft Networking message stating the "password is
incorrect". The IP$ prompt occurs when I try to access
the machine before entering the password. As I stated,
the userID is the same as the owner on the XP box.
Thanks for the info on the site. I will go through it
step by step because I believe it to be a permission
setting that isn't enable correctly.
Just for my own understanding, won't enabling everyone,
allow all users with administrative rights access to
every directory?
Thanks,
