I have a desktop and a laptop, both running xp pro. The
desktop works wonderfully, but the laptop loses its
connection as soon as I turn the desktop on. When I turn
the desktop off, the laptop will work again. Why don't
they both work? Why does the desktop pre-empt the
laptop? If I hard wired the desktop, would my problem go
away?
Because of my problem, I am unable to share files and
printers, which is the goal. I need to be able to print
and backup files to the desktop from my laptop.
I'm an idiot I know. Sorry to wast anyone's time.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Still a little confused, these are two PCs using wireless adapters in adhoc
mode (peer-to-peer)? Mind telling use the make/model? Come to think of it,
if they only work when the other PC is OFF, how in the world do you KNOW
they work since the only other PC it could be verified w/ is OFF! And when
one PC is on (btw, you me this LITERALLY, this problem occurs just by
turning ON the other PC, before Windows is even loaded?) the other loses its
connection?
There are a few important details missing from this post, I suspect there an
AP (access point), wireless router, somethin' else here that would help get
the COMPLETE picture.

I have a D-Link 713P wireless router. When I mean work,
I mean the internet. So the laptop connects to the
internet through the wireless router fine when the
desktop is off. As soon as I turn the desktop on, the
desktop connects to the internet, and the laptop losses
its internet connection. The desktop is a dell using a
new D-link pci card. The laptop is a gateway with a
built-in orinoco wireless card. I tried using a D-Link
DWL-650 PCMCIA card, it does exactly the same thing, so I
don't think using the D-link vs. the built-in makes any
difference. Just pressing the power button on the
desktop doesn't make the laptop lose its connection, its
once I get internet explorer up and going. Then by the
time I walk in the other room to go back to the laptop,
it's lost its connection. A few of the times that I have
tried this, the laptop will continue to work for up to a
minute or so. During that brief glimpse, I am able to
see and connect to the other computer through my network
places. So I think if I can find a way for both machines
to maintain their internet connections, I don't think I
would have any trouble sharing files or printing, which
is really what I'm after.
Truly sorry for any confusion. Let me know if this
completes the picture. I appreciate your time in helping
me.
Thanks again,
Casey

How are both computers connecting to the internet?
It sounds as if you are trying to get both machines on
the internet without ICS or a router.
If that is the case then you have to enable ICS or buy a
router.
Click on Start/Help & Support/type in Internet Connection
Sharing and click on >>. Read about how to enable
Internet Connection Sharing or if you are lazy go out
and buy a router.

Kind of stumped, but here's some ideas. If you have WEP enabled, disable
it. Also, try a peer to peer connection, i.e., change the mode from
Infrastructure to Adhoc, thereby bypassing the D-Link 713P wireless. First
try w/ the 713P ON, then OFF. If problems still persist, try changing
channels and other parms.
IOW, what you need to do is experiment with other configs to try and
eliminate the field of possible culprits, and maybe you can zero in the true
source of the problem.
