I'm trying to network my Dell Desktop running XP: HE to
my Gateway Laptop running XP: HE. My Dell will be acting
as the server computer. i've already set it up and both
computers can ping each other but i need to know how to
get the Gateway to connect to my Dell to have use of the
internet through the Dell. I can set up a direct
connection but i don't know what i should put in
the "User name", "Password", and "Domain" blanks. thx
for any help.

There's no need to set up a direct connection.
Share the Dell's Internet connection. Set the Gateway up as an ICS
client. Full details here:

address and subnet mask both changed but the Gateway's
didn't and when i went to repair it, it couldn't renew
the IP address.

Did you enable ICS on the right network connection on the Dell and
configure the Gateway as an ICS client? Does each computer show that
its local area network connection is enabled and working? Any error
messages?
On the Gateway, disable and then enable the network connection. Then
run these tests:
1. Dell: right click the local area network connection and click
Status | Support | Details. It should show:
IP Address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: none
DNS Server = none
2. Gateway: right click the local area network connection and click
Status | Support | Details. It should show:
IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1
3. Gateway: If #1 and #2 are right, open a command prompt window and
enter these lines. Each one should get four replies:
ping 192.168.0.1
ping 216.239.39.100
ping www.google.com
