I'm trying to set up my new PC with XP so I can access
the exisiting peer to peer network (machines on 98). Not
having much luck . I can connect to the internet over the
network, but that's about it. I also see another machine
on the network, but can't see any files. I don't want to
set up a new network just see the old one.

Lastly, when trying to use the Network wizard I thought
it said I should use an XP disk on all the 98 machines
in the network. Is this correct?

Any help would be appreciated.

No, don't run the XP disk on the 98 machines, even though the Wizard
tells you to. They're already set up for networking. Instead,
configure the new machine's network settings to be compatible with the
existing network. I've written a web page with details:

Adding Windows XP to an Existing Network
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/addxp.htm

If that doesn't get everything working, try this:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.
