I usually have to go back the second time to copy the
material from the web page -- but that is OK. When I do
get the material pasted,it appears in boxes. How can i
remove these boxes, and get a 'clean' page.

You can't change that easily.
You are seeing the boxes because the webpage was created using tables,
which where also copied. Unless you have experiance with webpage authoring,
it would be a very large task to do, and with some pages would be impossible
without re-doing most of it from scratch.

A quick workaround is to paste the text into Notepad, select an copy it
again and paste it into word. You will lose any formatting.
