View Full Version : Wireless Question[s]

I'm helping a buddy put in a wireless network so that both his, and his
wife's PC can make an internet connection. Both machines are running XP
Home edition. Prior to adding the cable high-speed service, both PC's
"shared" a dial-up connection. My buddy acquired a Netgear Router [MR814]
and a MA101 Wireless USB Adapter. The internet connection is cable, thru a
Seimens cable modem, and is working fine hard wired [ethernet] to one PC.
With the router in it place the connection is also working.
After adding the MA101 adapter to the 2nd PC, we've hit a wall. On PC, the
device manager "sees" the MA101, and reports that it's operating OK
[documented install procedure has been followed]. Every time I try to make
a network connection using the network wizard, it fails, and reports that
the wireless connection is not available. When viewing the Wireless Network
Connection Properties, any attempt to change a setting is giving us an
error message "An unexpected condition occurred. Not all changes could be
made." And then the properties box freezes, and cannot be closed [without a
3 finger salute of course]. Another error message that pops up [can't
remember the exact sequence] while using the network wizard is one that
says that the wireless device[s] are not completely installed or plugged
in; this has caused us to completely remove and reinstall the hardware and
drivers 3 times - yielded no change. I've got the ICF cutoff in both PC's.
The ESSID's are the same; WEP is turned off. Still no connection. FWIW, the
distance between the 2 devices is about 60 feet. The network protocols all
seem to be in good order on PC2.
I've been thru all the instructions and troubleshooting guides that Netgear
have to no avail. And, as an aside to Steve Winograd, I've been to your
website and have tried to find "anything" remotely similar as a possible
guide.
I could really use some pointers - I'm not that familiar with XP; I'm using
a striped down Win98 box myself; haven't ventured into the 21st century
yet.
Any help to save the remnants of my forehead from further scarring and
bruising will be greatly appreciated.
TIA

I have mentioned this before, there is or are a couple of windows updates
for XP, that when installed will make your wireless network---GO TO HELL, I
can not figure out which one it is, this might help.

Does the MA101 come w/ XP drivers? Sometimes they don't, they rely on
Windows WZC (Wireless Zero Configuration). I find WZC terribly buggy, it
didn't even detect my D-Link DWL-120 wireless adapter correctly, thought it
was a Compaq wireless or something. Anyway, it never worked. Switched to
D-Link drivers (like I should have known all along), now works perfectly.
And besides, the vendor drivers often provide interfaces to special features
not available via WZC.

Help, I'm having the same issue you're mentioning Jim and
I'm stumped!! I have a D-Link Router and wireless card
in my laptop. The internet connection works on both
PCs. But the laptop is saying it can't find the local
network. I called D-Link and they won't help because
they don't support XP-home. I'm so stumped. Help
please!!
Slow down a bit, describe your config in DETAIL, things like "The internet
connection works on both PCs" is to vague, what does that mean? For
example, I can't tell if you're saying you have two wireless PCs using the
wireless router just fine but can't do local file sharing, OR, these are
wired PCs, the router is fine, Internet access works, but when you use a
wireless laptop, it can't connect AT ALL to the router. Again, just too
vague. Describe in detail your problem, config, what does and doesn't work
under what config, wireless make/model, encryption on or off, etc., etc.

~~~~~MAJOR SNIPPAGE~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yes, it came with a full compliment of drivers, one for each flavor of
Windows still in normal usage.
I have DL'd the "latest" XP version from Netgear and am going to pop it in
for a test drive.
I ran across this same comment last night in another posting about a
totally different problem; am going to quiz the "equipment operator" to see
if any of the auto updates were done recently.
