View Full Version : static ip & my LAN?

Andrew
June 1st 03, 09:09 PM
For my computer i had to forward a few ports for a few
filesharing programs. In my router's config page, i chose
to forward ports to 192.168.1.3, i then configured my
network to 'use this ip' and entered my dns's and so on.
the port forwarding works fine and i've been able to
connect to the internet for some time now. When im
setting up my Network w/ another computer using the home
and small network wizard, everything seemed fine. i
viewed the workgroups in the netword, and im able to see
the other computer. when i try to click on it, however,
it gives me a popup saying "Xxxx (other computer's name)
is not accessible. you might not have permission to use
this network resource. contact administrator... etc."

what we have:
windows xp pro (mine)
windows xp home (his)
linksys befsr41 (not wireless)
he gets his ip via dhcp, i specified mine.

how i set it up:
setup home or small office>next>next>other>"this computer
connects to the internet directly or through a network
hub...">entered computer discription & name>entered work
group. the other computer did the same. (xp firewall is
off)

what i've tried: pinging both his computer name and his
ip, \\computername in cmd.

what i was wondering is:
1. since i forward ports would this affect how our
network communicates? if so, how can i configure it
properly?
2. should i have chosen "this computer connects to the
internet through another network computer on my network
or through a residential gateway"? and if so, for both?

sorry for the long post, but i was trying to give you as
much info as possible. any comment or suggestion at all
would be great! thank you!

.... is not accessible

Message: "....is not accessible. You may not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions. The semaphore timeout period has expired."

Resolutions:
1) make sure no any firewall running.
2) make sure you have created the same workgroup, and the same username on
w2k/xp for logging on a remote computer.
3) check user's rights.
4) you may want to enable guest account on w2k/xp.
5) if you are using simple file sharing, you may try to disable it and
re-share the drive manually.
6) if it is mixed OS (win98, NT, ME and W2K/XP) network, enable NetBIOS over
TCP/IP.
7) make sure the Computer Browser service is started if all computers are
w2k/xp.
8) stop Computer Browser service on win9x, ME and NT if this is a mixed OS
network.
9) cache credential by using net use \\computername\share /user:username
command (it is better to have the username logon shared computer).
10) if you have tried enabling netbios over tcp/ip but doesn't work, you may
try to load netbeui (loading netbeui may slow your network).
11) Make sure the server service is running.
12) If you can see the share in Network Neighborhood but not access it, this
issue may be resolved by verifying that both the share permissions and the
NTFS partition permissions are correctly configured for individual user or
group access.
