View Full Version : Wireless authentication problem!

I have a linksys BEFW11S4 Router and WPC11ver3 wireless
card. It will work normally when 802.1 authentication is
turned off, but when I turn it on the connection (link)
will disconnect in exactly 3 min., a message appears
telling me one or more wireless connections are available,
and I have to press the connect ket to get it to link back
up. Linksys support doesn't know the solution.

Hey Matt
It sounds like a "Power Mode" setting.
Right click the wireless connection in Network Connections and choose
Properties. Click the Configure button and select the Advanced tab.
Scroll down the Property list to Power Mode and see if the Value is set to
Continuous Access Mode. I would think that is the setting you would want
here.
Did you install a "configuration utility" with the wireless card ?
Sometimes there are issues between these and XPs Wireless Zero
Configuration.
I'm sure as hell no expert so let me know let me know how you make out.
By the way there is a dedicated wireless NG on this server if you want
another resource.

If you don't have an 802.1x authentication server on your network, then you
should NOT turn this on.

Barb
Please bear with me, I'm trying to get a better understanding of all
wireless aspects.
In regards to Matt's observation, according to their web site, LinkSys
supports
802.1x authentication on both the router and wireless card. With that said,
assuming he is using Windows XP, Wouldn't 802.1 be "available" on the
wireless network if he enabled it ? Wouldn't the 802.1x authentication
server be the computer running XP.
Inquisitively,

when they say it "supports 802.1x" it means that it will work seamlessly
with hardware/software that performs authentication. this is usually done in
an enterprise/corp environment with a radius server. if you don't have an
authentication server, you can't use 802.1x. Windows XP is not an
authentication server.

Barb,
In effect I had WEP (keys, encryption, etc.) "as part" of 802.1x .
Thank you for clearing up my misconception.

It will get a lot more interesting with WPA (WiFi Protected Access) ;-)
