I create desktop shortcuts to webpages. These shortcuts
have their own unique shortcut icon. Such as a shortcut
to Ebay has a Ebay icon. Internet Explorer replaces these
icons with its own Internet Explorer icon. Do you know
how to stop IE from doing this?

The icons are stored in your Temporary Internet Files (C:\Documents and
Settings\Chris\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files). Fidn the .ICO
files and copy them to another location on your hard drive. Then you can
process to change the icons for the shortcuts without ever losing them.

Stop cleaning out your temporary Internet files and cookies.
