I'm having trouble with my 1.8ghz running win98se. I
don't know it the motherboard is acting up or my 98se is.
I reinstalled the 98se but it's still acting up. If I
upgrade to winxp pro and it doesn't fix the problem, will
I be able to replace the motherboard and reinstall winxp?
I've heard that you only allow one installation. Thank
You

Not sure I would recommend any type of upgrade unless you "know
specifically" it would cure a problem.
Better to determine what exactly the problem is and its cure before 'trying
an upgrade'

As David has posted, if you are having an issue, upgrading is the last thing
you want to do unless such upgrade or patch, etc. was specifically designed
to resolve the specific issue youare having.

What you heard about one installation is incorrect. You can install XP as
many times as you want as long is it is on the same machine. Depending upon
how much hardware has changed, you may be required to activate XP again and
you will always be asked to activate XP any time your format. However,
activation is generally nothing more than a handshake between two computers
over the internet. If too much hardware has changed, you may be presented
with a phone number to call but again, this amounts to you explaining what
you've done and them giving you a new activation number over the phone.

Changing the motherboard might result in triggering activation but if that's
the only hardware you've changed, it likely will again be just a handshake
between two computers over the Internet.
