I have a dual boot (Windows 2000/XP Pro) machine that is
connected to the Internet via an USB ADSL modem and
another multiboot (Windows 95C/Windows 98SE/Linux) machine
connected to the first one via ethernet. Obviously, the
first machine, under any OS, hosts ICS for another one.
After many toubles I've finally got almost everything to
work - I have Internet access from any OS on both machines
(in all combinations), I am able to control remotely both
Windows 2000 or XP using a remote desktop under any OS on
another machine. I am able to browse Windows 2000 shared
folders in Explorer under Windows 9x and even in a file
manager under Linux (of course, I have to mount them
first) And I am also able to browse the Windows XP shared
folders (basicly the same folders that are shared under
2k) from Windows95 and Linux, but... not from Windows98!
In WIndows 98 I see Windows XP nachine name in 'Network
Neighborhood', but, when I try to browse it, I am being
prompted for an IPC$ password and no password is accepted.
Let aside Linux (just for simplicity, anythey - everything
is working there), but as far as I can see, all my
networking settings in Windows 95 and 98 are *identical*
(with same protocols installed), the only things that are
different are nachine names, machine IP numbers (both
machine names with respective IP numbers are registered as
members of the workgroup both under Win 2k and XP, the
group has the same name under 2k and XP.... well, under 2k
they are also members of the domain) Windows 95 and 98
also have different user names and in XP there are users
(with administrative rights) with both names (and, of
course, with the same password the respective user has in
Win 9x... actually it's exactly the same password for
both). I can log remotely on XP from 98 wuth *that* user
name and with *that* password (and if I mistype something
I am refused). Also, as far as I can see, both Win 95 and
98 machine names and both users have same settings and
same rights everythere in XP (maybe there's some obscure
feature in XP where user rights happen to be different for
some strange reason, but, I really have no idea where to
look for). I don't understand - if something is
misconfigured in XP, why I have no problems with 95 too?
(And why I *can* log in using remote desktop from 98
itself, as the same user, using the same password?) If the
problem is on 98 side, why it has no problem whith 2k too?
(Well, there is a domain in 2k, but, as far as possible,
my 2k and XP network setings are also almost identical -
different machine names, but - the same IP, the same
workgroup name, the same network mask, mor or less the
same protocols...)
Maybe it can mean something - both my 2k and XP are
English versions, both 9x are Italian, but, Internet
Explorer under 95 is English version while under 98 it's
Italian (and I need it so). Although... both English and
Italian use the same code page and for what might concern
keyboard layout - all characters found in my user names
and my password have the same possition in both layouts
(and I did triple checked banal things like CapaLock,
capital letters etc.)
And... I'm not quite sure, but, I think it used to work
(during my previous experimentations, when too many other
things didn't work). I've tried to change the users
password in Windows 98 (and after that to change it again,
to have the old one, the same as in XP) - without results.
Maybe a corrupt .pwl file? (But, I wouldn't like to delete
it just like that, without a serious indication that could
be the cause) Or what else?
