i have an xp portable

i have a custom visual basic app which needs to access a mapped drive ---
the "X" drive ...

when on the network, this drive maps to a shared folder on another machine
....

but i would like to work off-line as well, so my strategy is as follows:

while still on the network, i map "X" across the network right back onto a
shared folder which on the portable ...

but then when i take the laptop off the network the drive letter loses its
connection ... (the drive symbol shows a red x crossed-through it)

in w2k this works fine, but in XP it won't allow this ...

Install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter, which always has a network
connection:

1. Go to Control Panel | Printers and Other Hardware.
2. Click "Add Hardware".
3. Click Next.
4. Select "Yes, I have already connected the hardware".
5. Click Next.
6. Select "Add a new hardware device" from the list and click Next.
7. Select "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list"
and click Next.
8. Double click Network Adapters.
9. Click Microsoft Loopback Adapter and click Next twice.
10. Click Finish.
