when i tried to install my home network, between a laptop
and desktop, i ran into permision errors. the account i'm
using is the admin account, but i'm still getting theses
errors. the error pops up when i try to access the laptop
from the desktop. both are running xp pro.

Does the message say something like this?

xxx is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find
out if you have access permissions.

If so, that's a generic error message that really only means that
there's a problem on the network. The problem can have many causes.
It might or might not have anything to do with permissions.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on both computers to fully enable file
sharing.

If that doesn't solve the problem, please try the tips on this web
page:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.

If you've disabled "simple file sharing" on XP Pro, there could be a
problem with permissions. See this site for details:
