registration is optional. by registration, we mean giving microsoft
information about your name, address, etc.

maybe you mean activate. by activating, you are sending microsoft your
computer hash, a non-personally identifiable info of your computer, thus
enabling you to use windows xp beyond the 30-day grace period. this is also
the method to discourage piracy of winxp and other ms products.

just connect your self to the net and then click:
start > all programs > accessories > system tools > activate windows.

the process should be seamless and you should be finished in about three
minutes, assuming you did not make some major changes in your computer.

hope this helps.

Registration is not required for Windows Updates. If you need to Activate,
go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Activate Windows. But,
with that said, many computers that come with XP do not require Activation,
as the XP installation is BIOS locked to the machine.

There is no need to *register* in order to get updates; only for the
free 'support' calls, should you want them. If the machine came with
XP installed, the required 'activation' has almost certainly been
handled by the system being associated with ('Locked to') the BIOS on
the motherboard, and there is no action needed by you
