View Full Version : How to Deactivate Web content on Desktop-Missing Web tab
Rich/rerat
December 5th 03, 09:23 PM
I would appreciate any help in finding a solution to this problem. I =
need to turn off the Web content on the Desktop. Maybe a registry hack, =
or pointing me on the right path. Somehow I lost "Web tab" at the =
following location:
Control Panel> Display> Desktop tab> Customize Desktop button> Web tab.
All I see there is just the "general tab" there. I wonder if it is =
similar to the corrupted Main Identity problem, that can be found in OE =
because of registry corruption. And if it is, is there a simple way to =
transfer the settings/special folders, from one user acct to another on =
the same PC.
Thanks for the Help in Advances!

Thank-you but that did not work.=20
What I am trying to do is to get the WindowsXP version to display above =
the taskbar. But as soon as the taskbar appears after startup, it text =
disappears behind the taskbar. It does not move up to redock above the =
taskbar. That is why i asked about removing web content from the =
desktop, as per one (1) instruction in the tweakui instructions. This my =
everyday acct w/administrator rights.=20
I have another user acct, accting as the PC's administrator, and a Guest =
acct that is set for Limited access. The version text works properly on =
those user accts. I just hope that I don't have to create a new acct, =
cause it looks that it would be a pane to move the files to the new =
acct, from the old one.
I know I click on one thing that has caused this problem, and just can't =
find the setting to change back, to get things back.

I'm not sure I really understand what you're saying, but are you referring
to keeping the taskbar on top of other windows ? If so, right click the task
bar / properties and you'll see a setting to keep it on top.

You can try this fix at www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, Line 164,
Left Column Restore Taskbar to default functionality. You may also want to
turn off the desktop version and turn it back on, in the process.

First of all I want to thank both Doug and Foamy for all your help. I =
was able to fix the problem.
First Doug,=20
After doing your registry fix so many times that I can't remember, LOL. =
I got the web tab back. But the problem was that there is a selection to =
lock the taskbar on that tab, and if it is checked, the next time you =
reboot/logoff PC it causes the tab to disappear again. So every time =
that happen, I had to reset the Registry. I finally realized today that =
I needed to "uncheck" that selection on the "Web" tab". That I believe =
that was the original problem, with the version text issue. I did added =
those Registry fixes you mentioned, but personally don't think they made =
any difference, but still I thank you.
Which now brings me to Foamy,
I don't know how many times I switched between USER accts, looking at =
the all the Taskbar settings and features, in each ACCT. And as soon as =
I cleared the box as mentioned above, I was able to uncheck the "Lock =
Web Items on Desktop" feature on the Desktop taskbar, and keeping it =
unchecked. Foamy you kept me looking at the Taskbar, and its settings, =
as the cause of the problem.
I figured out what caused this problem, it was me and only me. Trying =
the new features of XP learning what I can. I was trying a suggestion, =
about making the text under Desktop icons transparent. And I must have =
check that box. For those who can not make the text under the Desktop =
icon transparent, any reference to locking the web features, need to be =
turned off. And now that feature is also working too.
Again to you both thank-you.

I have "Show Windows Version on Desktop" enabled in TweakUI. When my
desktop first shows, the windows version is there, displaying on top of the
desktop background. As soon as all my desktop icons get painted, though,
the windows version disappears. How can I keep it displayed?

Never mind. I found that unchecking the "Lock Desktop" box on the "Desktop
Items" dialog of the "Dsiplay Properties" solved the problem.
