I have a desktop running winxp with 2 NICs. One (Linksys NC100 Fast Ethernet
Adapter) (firewalled with xp icf) is connected to the cable modem and the
other ( Siemens SpeedStream PCI 10/100) (no firewall) to the client laptop
(Linksys EtherFast® 10/100 PC) (no firewall) win98se. ICS is configured
between the laptop and desktop.
Everything works fine except if I shutdown my desktop computer and forget to
disable the connection to the laptop first, when I turn the computer back on
it freezes. The only remedy at that point is rebooting in safe mode,
disabling the connection to the laptop, rebooting, and then re-enabling the
connection to the laptop.
It is a small inconvenience to disable the laptop connection before shutting
down the desktop, but a real pain if I forget and then later I'm locked out.
I have tried to sort out the solution to this but I just can not figure this
out. Any fixes to this problem are greatly appreciated.

Have you tried getting an updated driver for the Siemens NIC?

I did update the driver when I first installed the Siemens about 3 months
ago. I'll check and see if there is yet another update.
Thanks.

Actually, as it turns out, changing my Bios setting to non-plug and play did
the trick. I'm not certain why but apparently by letting the bios control
the PCI cards was the fix????? Just a guess.
