My dsl icon connects but not getting any web sites.
Verizon troubleshooted the problem and concluded that the
problem is the xp operating system. Im recieving the
following error message"Generic host process for win 32
service has a problem". Any ideas?

"SVCHOST.EXE" is "Generic Service Host." What that means is it is a "host" for other processes or services.
The error message may possibly be caused by a virus or spyware having damaged your Winsock and Winsock2 keys in the registry.
Are you still able to send and receive email?
Click on Start | Run and type in "winmsd" (without quotes) and press Enter
System Information | expand Components | expand Network | click on Protocol
At the top of each section you will see "Name" under the Item column
the value for "Name" for each section should start with either "MSAFD" or "RSVP"
The Name values should look something like this:
MSAFD Tcpip [TCP/IP]
MSAFD Tcpip [UDP/IP]
RSVP UDP Service provider
RSVP TCP Service provider
MSAFD NetBIOS [\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{C622C5E4-...
etc.
If the values for Name start with something other than MSAFD or RSVP,
then it is probably the name of some program or spyware that is causing your problem.
See if you can uninstall that program or spyware from Add or Remove Programs
and restart and see if you can browse the Internet again.
You may have to try the resolution from this article:
