I have a home network setup with some client computers
using Win98 and some computers using WinXP. I am using a
Linksys Router to facilitate the home network and the
Router has a Web Based Utility which is accessed by
typing http://192.168.1.1 into the Browser's address
field. I can access the Utility with the computers using
Win98 but when I try to access the Utility with the
computers using WinXP the access screen appears,
flickers, and before I have a chance to enter the
password the webpage changes to one that has Error 401.
Has anyone else had this problem and how have you dealt
with it.

Hi,
Make sure your Windows XP computer's network properties are configured
properly.
Either have it setup to obtain an IP address or make sure that the ip
address that you manually supplied is in the same subnet.

For example you may want to configure your WinXP computer to have a IP
address 192.168.1.10
subnet 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS Server 192.168.1.1 or the DNS server address supplied by your ISP.

Then try opening up a Internet Explorer browser and typing in the address
bar http://192.168.1.1
and see if the userid/password screen comes up.

If it doesn't check your Internet Explorer Options, by going up to the menu,
and then Tools and then to Internet Options. Now when the Internet Options
box comes up, click on the Connections tab, and then click on the LAN
Settings button. When the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings box comes up
ensure that all the checkmark boxes are unchecked. Then hit OK all the way
out and try typing in the address bar http://192.168.1.1 and see if the
userid/password screen comes up.

Hi Gary,
I did get the setup screen and User Id and PW went thru..
But still cannot access server files from client end or
visa versa.
I understand that using Me on router end and XP Home on
the client end is a problem..I checked Microsft knowledge
base on this issue and found no solution?
Any suggestions on the problem?

<I, also, did the network diagnostic in XP help/ support
and see that my MAC bridge adapter is seeing
255.255.255."255"? And in setup, I see that the Mac
address is 255.255.255."0"? (But, don't know where to
change it...in setup)?
Also, when ever I bridge my wireless connection, I loose
all internet connections? I have to remove my wirless
connection from bridge in order to regain Internet
connectivity.>

Hello,
Thanks for your imput Gary, but like I said the
userid/password screen appears but instantly flickers,
and before I have a chance to enter the necessary
information I am transfered to another page without the
userid/password screen with the error message 401,
correct information not provided for the userid/password.
