View Full Version : Me -> Xp networking problem...

Ok, so I want to set up a network (for internet connection
sharing). The host is a computer with Windows ME and a
usb dsl connection. The client has xp pro. I connected
them via network cables. Then I installed internet
connection sharing on the ME computer. Ok, it should all
work now, right? Nope. The only way I know it's
connected at all is because once in a while I see the host
computer (HOME) on my network places. And only once did I
see the files I have shared on the host computer
(actually, only the printer and the folder but was not
allowed to get to them).

Every time I try to access HOME, it gives me that //HOME
cannot be accessed blah blah blah error. Both computer
can ping each other successfully though, but I still
cannot get online with the client (it just times out after
a while). So I looked around for some possible solutions,
but none of these have helped: enable only tcp/ip as a
protocol, disable xp's firewall, enable netbios. Also,
the host computer does have zonealarm installed and set-
up, but I fully allowed ICS and something else that popped
up while setting up ICS.

Soo....can anyone help me?

If you have a recent version of ZoneAlarm on the ICS host computer,
set the Internet Zone Security to Medium and set the Trusted Zone
Security to Low.

The only way to know for sure whether ZA is causing problems is to
completely un-install it while troubleshooting.

Check the ICS client's TCP/IP settings. They should be:

IP Address: 192.168.0.x (1<x<255)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server = 192.168.0.1
