I have read many threads in this group and have tried
many things to fix this problem. Below I will list the
things I have tried to fix this problem. Nothing has
worked so far. I was able to map a shared drive by using
IP (\\192.168.1.1\shared) and everyone can access the
internet
I have a workgroup of xp Pro machines and 2 pc's cannot
browse the workgroup or access any shared files. I can
ping the other computers but can not access any
resources.
I receive the following error:
workgroup is not accessible. you might not have
permissions to use this network resource. contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permission.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available.
I noticed when the computer was in the MSHOME workgroup
everything worked fine but when I changed the workgroup
name to WORKGROUP is when the problem happened. Only 2
workstations showed this error All the other workstations
have no problems.
Things tried to fix the problem.
1. make sure the firewall is disabled on the network
card.
2. On the WINS tab click enable netbios over TCP/IP
3. in my computer, Tools, folder options, view tab
deselect use simple file sharing
4. the below task supplied by Steve Winograd, MS-MVP
(Windows Networking)
..
Run "ipconfig /all" and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of
the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer", that's probably
the problem.
It means that the computer only uses a WINS server (which
isn't
available in a true peer-to-peer network) for NetBIOS
name resolution.
If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this
key:
HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parame ters
and delete these values if they're present:
NodeType
DhcpNodeType
Reboot, then try network access again.
If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again,
create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast"
or 4 for
"Mixed".
