View Full Version : XP Pro Networking Problem

I have an existing wireless network with 2 XP Home
laptops, an ME PC and a 98 PC. Netgear router and
wireless adapters. Works fine.

I tried to add an XP Pro laptop to the network in place of
the ME PC (I'm using the wireless adapter that was being
used by the ME PC). The other machines are able to see
the XP Pro laptop in My Network Places, however, if they
click on it, an error message appears. If I try to ping
the XP Pro laptop, it also returns an error message.

On the XP Pro laptop, the other PCs are not listed in My
Network Places. If I ping the other machines from here, I
do get the proper 4 replies.

The XP Pro laptop is able to access the internet fine
through the router (and then through the cable modem).
However, I'm unable to take advantage of shared resources
on the existing network (printers, etc). Any ideas?

Thanks, Elliot
The settings on the XP Pro machine look identical to the
XP Home Laptops. Is there something that I should be
doing differently on the Pro machine?

It would be helpful if we knew what the error messages say, Elliot.
They contain important information about the problem.

Without that, the best that I can do is to refer you to this web page:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.
