View Full Version : XP Home Edition networking problem

Jeff
June 16th 03, 10:05 PM
I have three computers: One running 2000, another running
98SE and the last running XP Home Edition

I'm currently using the 98SE computer's Internet
Connection Sharing protocols to share internet and can
ping properly/ go online on all three computers

However, when i try to access the XP Home computer, every
computer says there is a network problem. When i use the
XP comptuer to open the other computers, XP also says
that you need previledges.

I've tried all of this and the netork troubleshooting
guide but still no luck:

- Each computer is able to ping each other (192.168.0.1 ,
192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.1)
- Each computer can go online
- All in the same workgroup (i can see each computer's
name in workgroup, but cannot access the XP computer)
- Internet connection firewall is disabled
- No antivirus software installed on any computer
- Shared folders can be seen btwn 2000 and 98SE, but no
communication possible with XP at all except for internet
and pinging

Please help!

I want to share files with XP!

What is the error message? Have you created user accounts on your XP
machine that have identical names and passwords as the account you use to
logon to the other machines?

Here is the error message from the XP computer (comp
network name "Stacy", workgroup "Lan":

"Lan is not accessible. You might not have permission to
use this network resource. Contact the adminsitrator of
this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list if servers for thsi workgroup is not corrently
available"

=======
Here is the error message from the 2000 computer trying to
access "Stacy" (btw, i can see the computer icon in the
Lan workgroup folder, but when I open double click
the "Stacy" computer icon, i get this message):

"\\Stacy is not accessible

The network path was not found"

=======
All three computers have unique user accounts, and only XP
("stacy") and 2000 have blank passwords.

=======
I've also tried connecting the XP and 2000 directly
(making sure i twisted teh cable... pinging worked
correctly) and i still could not look into the XP computer
and the XP computer could not see 2000 in "network
connections" (same workgroup, etc)

Matching accounts are a good idea, Phil: they're needed to access 2000
Professional, and they might be needed to access XP Professional.
However, they aren't needed to access XP Home, which Jeff says he's
running. XP Home allows network access by all users.

Jeff, here are two other things that I think are most likely to get XP
Home working in the network:

A. Run the Network Setup Wizard on XP Home to fully enable file
sharing.

B. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection and
click Properties.
3. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click WINS.
6. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.

I'm having the exact same problem, only I only have XP and
2000 Server... Same error messages and the same when it
comes to even seeing the other computer from XP, I can see
XP from 2000 but cannot access it!
Hope someone can help us. If you figure something out from
any other means of info please post or email.
I will do the same.
Thanks

===============

Alright, I went on my 2000 computer, edited the hosts file
so it looks like this:

192.168.0.3 Stacy

well, since my 98SE DHCP seems to assign that comp with
that IP, i guess its ok to leave it be

after saving the hosts file, i was able to gain access to
all the computers with 2000! Sweet!

I've enabled NetBios over TCP/IP, ill have to check if
that works later

and the XP internet setup thing.... it says it only works
ono XP, 98, and 95?
