That's a question you'd have to ask HP, but here's my guess: It costs money
to support older hardware that few people use.

Not everyone can afford to replace their perfectly good printers every
time H-P and the others change the plastic cases and up the speed a few
characters per sec. It is called planned obsolescence (GREED) . Funny
that they wont upgrade the drivers but I can still get ink cartridges
for my older unsupported printer to use with the crappy drivers that are
included with XP.
Any how in answer to the original question don't hold your breath but
you can get back most if not all of your older printers features by
going here www.fineprint.com and looking into their FinePrint program.
It does cost ($49.95) but it will give back duplex printing and more
features.
I have used it ever since XP came out and H-P refused to put out
equivalent ME drivers for XP.
Works great. Also I can still use cheaper refill ink cartridges or fill
my old ones myself which most if not all new H-P and other newer
printers do not allow any more. When I can no longer use my existing
older printer due to it plain wearing out or I can no longer get
refilled or new ink cartridges for I will look into perhaps getting a
newer one.

thank you, I am trying to use the full features of my printer which when I
bought it, it cost me 90 pound so I think I should get the full benefits of
what I paid for. As Ken said I cannot afford to buy a new printer at the
moment as I have just upgraded my machine and also I have about 6 ink
cartridges which I bought when I had a spare bit of cash so the problem
would be getting another printer that uses the same cartridges. loads of
messing, and I don't see why I should I have only had this printer 18
months. Typical Microsoft and HP, I bet it would only take a few hours to
put an xp driver and utility together.

With all respect, I fail to see why you hit out at Microsoft.. they are not
responsible for ensuring that you have all of the printer features that HP
made available on the original HP installation CD..

If you think it would only take a few hours, give it a try. And, why
don't you buy a refill kit instead of cartridges?

Printers have become a disposable item due to consumer demand. In the
printer market, the majority buy on price, thus the printer makers have
to sell their stuff cheap to stay in business and continue to employ
their work force.

As you know, the printer makers have tried to make up the lost sales
margins by charging way high prices for carts. It's a matter of survival
for the printer makers, I dont believe its a greed thing in this case.

If HP made a home printer that guaranteed OS driver upgrades for years
to come and also made one that lasted more years they'd have to charge
maybe 3 times the price for it at bestbuy etc. Do you really think
anybody would actually buy it when compared to the cannon or whatever
sitting right next to it at 1/3rd the price. No way.
