The task bar on my desk top screen has always been just
one row (thick), but today I must have done something to
make it double thick, two rows, and I cannot figure out
how to get it back to the single row. Appreciate any help.

Right click on the Taskbar and uncheck Lock Taskbar. Then move the mouse up
over the top edge until it turns to a double arrow. Left click and drag the
top back down. If that doesn't correct your issue, see
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, line 164, left column,
Restore Taskbar to Default Functionality for a small utility that will
restore it to its default behavior.

Right-click on the Taskbar and uncheck "Lock Taskbar." Put your cursor over
the top of the taskbar until it turns into a double arrow. Now, drag the
taskbar back down.
Hope this helps.
