View Full Version : Multiple protocols in Windows XP

In Windows 98 it was easy to have IPX/SPX and TCP/IP
installed at the same time. After I add IPX/SPX in Windows
XP TCP/IP goes away and does not show up when you try to
add a protocol. How do you install multiple protocols in
Windows XP?

TCP/IP never appears on the list of protocols that you can add. It's
an integral part of the XP operating system, and you can't add or
remove it.

Does TCP/IP disappear from the window that says "This connection uses
the following items" in the network connection's properties? If so,
it's possible that TCP/IP just scrolled out of view.

Before I add IPX/SPX protocol the TCP/IP protocol appears
in the list of installed but after I add IPX/SPX there is
no TCP/IP even when I scroll through the whole list. I
want to be able to hightlight TCP/IP and then
click "Properties" but it just isn't there. I have worked
on numerous peoples computers running Windows XP Home
Edition and once IPX/SPX is there TCP/IP is not.

Thank you

I'm sorry, James, but I don't know the answer to your question. I've
installed IPX/SPX on XP many times, and I've never seen the behavior
that you describe. TCP/IP scrolls out of view at the end of the list
of items that the connection uses, but it's still there when I scroll
down.

What do you see if you go to a command prompt and run "ipconfig /all"?
Do the network adapter and its TCP/IP properties appear there?

Do any TCP/IP properties appear if you right click the network
connection and click Status | Support?

Thank you for your input Steve. I am not at an XP machine
at the moment to try your suggestions (I am at work) but
tomorrow I will try the commands you have suggested.
Thanks again for your help.
