DVD colour/resolution message

Hi,

Whenever I try to play a DVD I get a message saying :

" Playback failed due to a problem with the video
subsystem. Lowering your screen resolution or color depth
may fix the problem"

I've tried this but it makes no difference.
Its a new XP machine.

Can anyone help ??
