Hi,
I am having problems with all web page e-mail links. When
ever I click on a link, my PC hangs for about 20 seconds,
then at least 50 web pages will be loaded all over my
screen, some blank and some displaying the "action
canceled could not find the web page you requested"
message. Sometimes an error window will appear in which it
is stated that "task could not be performed as the default
mail program is not properly loaded". I am running XP home
on a 1.5 p4 with 512 of rambus ram. I have scanned for
viruses with latest AVG up-date and done an itrend online
scan but nothing showed up. I loaded the blaster patch
from MS, and regularly downloaded all widows up-dates, I
have held my tongue in every position I know whilst doing
the above but nothing has worked. If I just use Outlook
Express(my default)on it's own, I have no problems and
like wise with Explorer. It just seems as if MS Explorer
(latest) and MS Outlook Express (latest) are not talking
to one another. I have only noticed the problem since I
updated to IE version 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422.1633IS.
from the MS Windows update site. When I looked in Internet
Options under the programs tab, no E-mail program is
specified and none are present in the field or drop down
menu to select from. It won't let me type anything in the
field to specify my the e-mail program IE should use so
I'm stuck. When I checked the extension, "URL:MailTo
Protocol" in File Types, within the Control Panel, within
the field "Application used to perform action:" is
entered "rundll32.exe url.dll,MailToProtocolHandler %l"
in the field marked "Action:" is entered "open". There is
also a check in the "Use DDE, but in the field "DDE
Message:" there is nothing, The "Application" field
contains "url". The "DDE Application Not Running:" field
is blank. The "Topic:" field displays the word "System".
I'm confused, how do I specify my mail program to Explorer
if there is nothing to select from?? Of course, when I
directed the URL mailto Protocol shortcut to msimn in the
C:/Programs/Outlook folder, it just open Outlook Express
when clicking on an e-mail link (at least it doesn't open
50> Explorer windows) but it won't open a pre-addressed
and titled blank e-mail ready for text entry how it is
supposed to. Help!

If you could use paragraphs when composing long messeages, it would make
them easier to understand.

Look for possible spyware programs or browser plugins installed in
add/remove programs and get rid of them.

If you can get online long enough, download ad-aware or spybot and make that
a regular part of your maintenence. Once you have cleaned out the underlying
problem, then you can worry about file associations.

Kim,
Try this: Open "Outlook Express" and click Tools:
A. Under "Accounts", be sure to setup everything including "Mail" and
"News".
B. Then under "Options", General Tab: make sure that sure that the bottom
two entries are clicked to make Outlook Express the default program for both
mail and news.
C. Also under "File", make sure you have properly established the
"Identities".
Not sure any of this will solve your problem, but sometimes things are
simple.
