I am not getting an icon for "performance & maintenance"
in control panel therefore cannot easily get into device
manager. Does anybody know how to get the "performance &
maintenance" icon into Control Panel where it is supposed
to show up?
thanks

Hi, Dean.
On MY WinXP Pro, the click-path is: Start | Control Panel | System |
Advanced | Performance. To get to the Device Manager, it's Start | Control
Panel | System | Hardware | Device Manager. (Usually I short-cut the first
3 clicks by just pressing Win+Break.) I don't have a Performance &
maintenance icon in Control Panel.
There is a Performance and maintenance topic in Help and Support; is that
what you were looking for?

Dean,
You need to switch to 'Category View' - look at the top part of the 'Common
Tasks' area on left of Control panel display.
'Performance and Maintenance' is the title of one of the categories
displayed in this alternative view of the Control Panel.

You can get to the device manager easily by right clicking on your computer
icon on the desktop, select [ properties ] and [ hardware ] and there it is.

Ignore my stupid response. It's a good answer, unfortunately it had nothing
to do with the question you asked. <g>
