I like using windows explorer to manage my files on my
laptop. I have a shortcut on my desktop. It worked last
week just fine. Now when I click it i get My Documents
window. I have done a search of my hard drive and the
only explorer files are Internet Explorer files.

Karen,

By default, Windows Explorer always opening up with My Documents. Customize
it, by changing the properties for the Windows Explorer icon
1. Right click on the icon you use to launch Explorer and select Properties.

2. In the Target box of Properties type (or replace the existing text with)
the following (without quotes):

"%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe /e, path"

Where in place of path above you should enter the actual path to the
directory you want open by default. For example C:\Windows, or C:\Documents
and Settings, etc. The path also doesn't require quotes around it.

Regards,
Ramesh

Karen,

The My Documents window you're getting is an Explorer window. You need to
check the properties of the shortcut to ensure that the drive/folder you're
trying to "default" to exists, and that the command line is correct.

How to Have Windows Explorer Default to the %SystemRoot% Drive When Started

Create or modify your existing shorcut to read:

%systemroot%\explorer.exe /e,/root,

This will cause Windows Explorer to open to the drive that XP is installed
on.

I partially figured it out by using %systemroot%\explorer.exe ,/root,
as the shortcut properties but I would like to have the "folders" show
in the left pane if possible. Is it?

Yes, it is possible. That's how I have mine setup. For the target path in
the Explorer.exe shortcut enter the following:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,

Note the comma at the end of the above line. It is meant to be there and it
should be included.
