View Full Version : Add Win98 Fonts to XP?

I've discovered that my XP Home machine does not have a single script font in
common with the prior Microsoft products. Why, I cannot imagine since I
would have though the cheapest/easiest approach for Microsoft would have been
to use the same fonts over again. This makes document transfer improbable if
not impossible.

Is there any reason one can't copy all the fonts from a Win98 machine and
install them on XP Home? And maybe delete all the XP fonts which aren't
useful, but still confusing since they can't be used in documents going to
other machines?

Thanks...

Bill

Hi Bill,
I dont see any reason why you cant add the win 98 fonts....Not sure about
deleting fonts one idea I thought of was that certain applications may need
them.

Be careful "deleting all the XP fonts which aren't useful" since this may
cause display problems within XP. You may copy any font onto your system
from the old system (as long as you don't violate any license agreements).

Without network connectivity - With Explorer on the old system, highlight
the fonts you want to copy and place them on a disk or CD. Place disk in
new machine. Open Control Panel, click Fonts, Click File/Install new font.
Drill down in directory structure where CC or disk is located. Allow font
list to build. Make sure that "copy fonts to fonts folder" is checked.
Highlight all fonts you want to install and click OK. Any font that is
currently on the machine that is trying to be reinstalled will come up with
an error message. Don't copy the older file over the newer one.

With network connectivity between machines - Share the fonts folder on the
win 98 machine. Map to the fonts folder share on the 98 machine on the win
xp machine. Open Control Panel, click Fonts, Click File/Install new font.
Drill down in directory structure where the mapped drive is located. Allow
font list to build. Make sure that "copy fonts to fonts folder" is checked.
Highlight all fonts you want to install and click OK. Any font that is
currently on the machine that is trying to be reinstalled will come up with
an error message. Don't copy the older file over the newer one.

I carried over stacks of fonts when I upgraded, which wouldn't work, also
didn't appear in Word drop-down list.
I seem to remember XP only recognises True-type fonts (.ttf)
