How to Have Windows Explorer Default to the %SystemRoot% Drive When Started

Create or modify your existing shorcut to read:

%systemroot%\explorer.exe /e,/root,

This will cause Windows Explorer to open to the drive that XP is installed
on.

Thank you, Doug. The link and the example used terminology
(%xxx% etcetera) which was alien to me. I searched for expolorer.exe
and then put c:\windows\explorer.exe into the window and am now
'on the air'.

You're welcome, Bill.

The 'variables' like %SYSTEMROOT% correspond to predefined folders within
the XP folder structure. Clicking Start, Run and entering %SYSTEMROOT%, for
example will open the folder that Windows is installed in. That way program
installers can reference these variables, rather than have to assume that
its in C:\Windows, or go look it up in the registry.

You can open a Command Prompt window and enter SET The listing of set
"environment variables" will include the folders that have 'variables'
assigned to them. Some are machine wide, some are user specific.

%SYSTEMDRIVE% is the boot drive, usually C:
%ProfilePath% points to your user folder under Documents and Settings.

Just some examples.
