Startup Programs-Functionality/Disabling

I need to disable all non-essential software from running
in the background after booting, e.g. my laptop vendor
has placed auto-query/update stuff in startup... and MS
has stuff there I probably don't need.

How does one
1. determine what is running? (alt-ctl-del Applications,
Processes tabs?)
1. determine who owns it, and what it's functionality is?
3. disable it? (how do I find the Startup programs?)

small utility scans your system for startup programs and running processes.
It gives you the exectuble command line from shortcuts or Registry entries.

To identify a particular program, right click the executable in question,
select Properties, Version. Most files will have information indicating
what company its from. That is, if the path to the file doesn't give you
the answer.

To disable a program, check its own options for a way to turn off
autostarting with XP. If you can't find it there, click Start, Run and
enter MSCONFIG Go to the Startup tab.
