hard drive restarts

I have a very unique problem. I have 2 harddrives, one is partitioned
in 2 and the third is left alone. The 2 partitions are 40 gig's each
and the third is 80. The third is ID'd as "E" drive.
Any time I click on a file in the "E" drive, my whole screen refreshes
and any windows opened are closed and I am returned to the desktop.
This only happens when I go to the "E" drive. I have my anti-virus up
to date and have run what is called a deep check. Nothing comes up as
being a virus.
Question: Can someone guide me in the direction as to what to do to
fix this problem. Hopefully without have to have reformate it?

Hi Dan,

It sounds like there may be a power situation to that drive or the drive
itself might be going bad. I would suggest first going to the website of
the hard drive's manufacturer and downloading the disk diagnostic software
and making a bootable floppy out of it.

Then shut the computer down, open it up and unplug the power cable to
that drive and then plug it back in and making sure it is firmly in place.
Start the computer up and see if the behavior still occurs. If so, put the
boot disk you made in the computer and reboot and run the test that is
unobtrusive and will not erase your data.

Follow up.
I check power suppy and all connections, all connections were tight
and the voltage output was within limits. This was checked with the
MB Bios and with my own digital meter.
However, I had read once before where Kazaa files may be causing the
problem. Since I did have a "Share Folder" on this drive, I started
to delete one file after another. Low and behold, there was a file
that was causing this problem. Therefore, I can honestly say the
problem is fixed.
AS for Kazaa, scince the music industry is now going after the people
who are doing the downloading, I have decided to take the program off
my PC, until such time as the Supreme Court tells these people that
what they are doing is unconstitutional.

Dan,

Good to hear that it wasn't a hardware issue and I'm glad that you got
everthing fixed! Third party programs can often cause issues, but this is
the first I've heard of this symptom so it's good to know. Thanks for
