comp hangs at startup

During the XP screen with the short moving bar under the
words Windows XP, my computer hangs up. The bar stops
moving and there is no cursor. I've tried everything to
shut it down, but the only way besides unplugging it is
by holding the power button down for 5 seconds. This
happens fairly often, but not all the time. What can I
do? Thanks in advance...

Problems of that kind can be due to a hardware issue if they occur
irregularely.
