What Video card for video?Help.

Hi All,

What features and benefits are required in a graphics card to edit video at
a home enthusiast/prosumer level assuming cost no object (without being
wasteful)?I have P4 @ 1.8 GHz /XP Pro/768RAM/over 300GB HD space/Firewire
card/DV Camcorder/DVD burner/LCD computer screen.

I gather the following apply:

1) Video in /video out - but what if I already have a Firewire card and DV
camcorder would I just need "TV" out?
2) Memory - How Much?
3)Colour depth and resolution - How much?
4) Real Time rendering - How much or how is this measured?
5)AGP x ??
6)Anything else?
7)The ATI Radeon 9800 pro and AIW 9000 Pro seem to get a good rap.Any
comments on video editing potential?
8) Other card recommendations?

The ATI 9800 or 9700 series will not let you down. The 9700pro comes with
128MB memory. The 9800 comes with either 128MB or 256MB.

How does the AIW version compare with the 9700 or 9800 Pro? Would I be
better to get the latter and add TV tuner function separately?

The cards are identical but with the addition of the tuner. I have the AIW
9700 Pro, and love it. Only complaint is that the tuner is "weak" in
channels 2 thru 6 (a common complaint), but even with this it is still
better than any other tuner I have seen. If you would like to add PVR and
TV Tuner capabilities, by all means add the AIW.

Does the AIW 9700 (and presumably 9800) come with DVI output?
Also what about its' "real time" rendering for video editing(or is this only
in megabuck cards) (I can't find much about this)?

Hi Jon

Yes I found a rave review on this card and thought it was the latest version
of the AIW's before I realised that there was a AIW 9800...I wonder what
wonderful things have been added (sorry,bad puns :-) )

On a different point,I also noted that Hercules put out Radeon cards.Do you
know if they are any different to the ATI's?

Memory timing is different on the Hercules cards...this can make a
difference in rendering times for certains codes, and in graphics intensive
games. If you plan on palying any games bbased upon the soon to be released
Doom III engne, go with a made by ATI for the fastest memory bus. There

The ATI AIW are still the best Video editing solutions for under $1000.

the 9700 AIW only has dvi out and can only support single display,
The 9800 AIW 128mb ois not worth the price!!

- the 9800 has vga / dvi out. - but frankly the 9800 is not worth it's
price for the plain one or the AIW

u may want to check ati web site for full details on both cards.

my vote goes to the 9700 AIW - plan to grab one myself and the price is good
for what you get compared to the 9800.
