Hi again folks. Please humor me if this has been dealt
with already. Here's what I have......8mm camcorder tapes
( hi8 ), windows xp, cdrw ( no dvd slot ). Here's what I
need.....convert analog recording to digital media that
allows me to edit using PC. I understand that I can have
someone perform the conversion onto vcd's, but can I edit
the content from that point or do I need different media
or software ? Much thanks in advance.

Hi Dino,

I installed a firewire card and got a firewire cable. And I borrow my son's
or daughter's digital8 camcorders. They can play the 8mm tapes and Movie
Maker, which is included in XP can capture the video from the tapes.

Then I edit on the computer using Movie Maker.

Thank you PapaJohn, do you mean that with a firewire card
and cable, there's no need to have the analog signal
converted to digital cd and the camcorder can just be
plugged in to the 'puter? Wow, if that's the case, I'm
humbled and impressed once again by modern technology !

Yes Dino,

That's how I do it with my 8mm and Hi8 tapes. But I need to borrow a digital
8 camcorder to play back the analog tapes. Bring an analog tape to a digital
8 camcorder and try playing it back in the camera. If it plays back on the
camcorder screen, then it'll work going to your computer.

But my format is quite different. HI8 is much larger than Digital catridges.
Will never fit (the Hi8) into Digital movie video camera.
