I hear no audio playing DVDs in Media Player. But when I try the same
movies with PowerDVD XP, they work fine. Any ideas?

Do you have a DVD codec installed specifically for WMP?

Not one specifically for MP. Do you need one for MP? It wouldn't even
attempt to play a DVD before I installed PowerDVD. I thought PowerDVD
installed a software Codec that any player could use.

Unfortunately you do. It seems that every DVD player has it's own Codec.

Don't suppose there are free (or really cheap) codecs available? Seems to
me, the PowerDVD codec worked with earlier versions of Media Player (pre 9).

Not that I've found. The ones I found are on the WMP 9 website.
