XP Backup Problems

I have a XP Pro machine using travan tape drive that is
having problems seeing the backup tapes.

If I run a backup manually I can get it to backup, but it
asks me if I want to overwrite the tape when I have it set
to overwrite automatically.

When I setup a the backup job to run on a schedule the job
doesn't run at all. I have tested the schuduler and it
opens the backup software, but doesn't run the job.
