View Full Version : WHY IS WINDOWS SLOWER AFTER TIME?

ALEX K

Why does every version of windows work slower weeks or
months after intallation? I mean when you first intall
it, it blazes even if you have other stuff intalled.
Then it's much slower, why?

You must defrag regularly and clean temp files.

If you have windows update 811493 it has a issue that is causing a slow
down. Many, including myself have deleted this update.

Yep, bit of a home goal by Redmond with this one! It kind
of makes you what testing they did prior to release...?

More info in this article if you are not familiar with the
problem:

Incorrect. This was an issue with 9x and me, but not with any NT
system. Cleaning temp directories has absolutely nothing to do with
speed.

One valid reason is people tend to download and install crap that runs
all the time, such as real (bad) player, kazaa, and various instant
messengers. Simple way to speed up your computer is to NOT RUN ****

First of all, when MS releases an update it is to fix a problem or provide
us with more security. Secondly if MS had to test their updates with the
millions of programs in existance they would never be able to release an
update.

You still have to defrag with XP Home Edition. I just did my first one
and it made a helluva difference.

Correction: NTFS does not require defrag. I tend to assume that one
who uses an NT OS would also use an NT file system.

Still incorrect. NTFS also requires a defrag. Try right clicking on your
NTFS drive and check tools. Over time an NTFS drive can become fragmented
and it will impact performance according to Microsoft.

I think the biggest problem occurs when the Free Space is badly
fragmented! There may be plenty of room, but large files, sometimes
the swap file, get strung out across the disk. Access times then come
and getcha! - RM

I'm no expert but I can only report from practical experience what I
said earlier. After 2-3 weeks of admittedly intensive use, but only
filling 20 G of an 80 G drive my sytem was slowing right down, (XP
Home with NTFS). Analysis told me I needed to defrag, some 40 % of the
disk showed as fragged. It took all night to do it and it really freed
things up.
