Updates suggests I need to download 43mb of patches which
is going to be time consuming and costly via my home 56k
connection.
Can I download updates for XP home from my broadband
connection at work which is a win2k o/s and install when I
return home.

You can do this using the "Windows Update Catalog". More info here:
