What kind of videos are these? U need to know what codec
is used for them. Microsfot's Codec Package only has
support for Windows Media Files. u will need to get the
right codec for the file. download a program
called "Gspot" and it can tell u want codec's u need to
install.

I shut down the computer in total frustration at about 3am having replaced
all the known multimedia apps with no success whatsoever. All video clips,
mpg, avi, wmf, clips from MSN, anything and everything...black and white
only. I come back, 15 hours later, turn on the computer, read this post
from Chris, get GSPOT, run it to see what codecs are installed and ...ready
for this, everything plays just fine now. In other words, I did nothing. Go
figure.

Anyhow, thanks for pointing out this excellent diagnostic tool.

I just had my computer decide to start playing all .mpg and .mpeg files in black and white -- does anyone know a registry setting that might have been changed? Norton Registry Tracker hasn't found any changes, System Restore didn't find any differences, and no .ini files under the \Windows\ or \Program Files\ directories were changed... so I'm at a loss as to find the problem.

I tried installing new CODECs, and remove/reinstall the ones I already had, all to no avail...

Does anyone else have any ideas? I'm dumbfounded... as far as I know, I didn't do anything to the system myself; all .avi, .mov, ... work fine in color... web pages show in color... so it's not the monitor.

Thanks in advance.....
