sorry micheal this message comes up all the time now
I open windows and it says
exploer error in kernell32.dll
try restarting computer and I can close it and still go
into windows.

OK, most of what I've already posted may help. You can try nailing down the
source of the issue as follows. Open Control Panel, open Administrative
Tools, open Event Viewer, look for errors that correspond to when you had
this problem, double click the error, the information contained within may
give a clue as to the source of the issue.

Make sure all your drivers are up to date, especially your graphics card and
soundcard and any peripheral connected to the system. Do not use Windows
Update for this, use the device manufacturer's web sites. If you install
updated drivers, ignore messages saying the drivers are unsigned by
Microsoft.

Place the XP CD in the drive, assuming you have an actual XP CD as opposed
to a recovery disk, when the setup screen appears, select "Check System
Compatibility." If you have problem hardware or software it may show up in
this report.

If the above doesn't help and the error messages don't point to anything
definitive then the information I previously posted with regard to SFC and
Repair install would be the way to go.
