What happens if you don't activate within the 30 days
after installation of the XP upgrade? Is activation
absolutely necessary?

Windows XP Product Activation is mandatory. If you do not activate
Windows XP within 30 days, then your computer will cease to function
properly and only Safe Mode will be available.

Go to Start > Run and type: WINVER , and hit enter. Read the =
information
contained in the End-User License Agreement.

Yes Activation is necessary. After the 30 days you will not be able to
access the Desktop and will be forced to Activate or remove XP (or stare at
the Welcome Screen)

Good clear inform about WPA is found here http://www.aumha.org/a/wpa.htm

You will be unable to boot except in safe mode.

Yes. But it also represents no problem at all (except for those
with pirated versions). It's quick and easy to do.
